Practical Info

Musandam can be reached from Ras al Khaimah and Fujairah, the border crossings are quite different.
Khasab (Oman) from Ras al Khaimah (UAE): By car, the border  to Oman is about an hour from RAK (about 2 hours from Dubai). It is a proper border crossing where you exit the UAE and then enter Oman. For current visa information including the e-visa, please check here:
Oman Government - Visa Page
Dibba (Oman) from Dibba, Fujairah (UAE): There are 2 border crossings in the city of Dibba, the one currently used for tourists is the one shoreside past the corniche. To be able to cross into the Omani side of Dibba the tour operator or hotel you booked will need to get a copy of your passport and residence visa page to apply for you to be cleared to pass 72 hours in advance. You will not get a stamp in your passport and you will not need a visa as it is more of a checkpoint rather than a border crossing. If you are in the UAE on a tourist visa, you can easily cross without getting prior clearance.

If you are traveling by car, make sure you have your car registration with you and that you have insurance coverage for Oman. When renting a car in the UAE, check with the car rental company. Usually, Oman insurance can be purchased additionally through them.

When to visit

Musandam also gets very hot in the summer months, the water temperature may even exceed your body temperature at the surface! Temperatures can reach 50 degrees C and is gets rather humid.
From October to March the water temperature drops down to 21 degrees C and daytime temps stay below 30 degrees C. There may be a few days of rain during this time.
If you go on a Dhow cruise, April/May and September/October are great since the water is warm but the air temperature is not scorching yet. There are liveaboards with air-conditioned cabins, which are highly recommendable. On these, a trip in the summer can also be manageable.
